February 2004

The Board of Trustees has announced a contest to design a seal for the township.  I would like to see the students get involved in the township and what a better way than a contest with a meaningful end result.  We have asked the assistance of the Field schools to have the students submit he design and we will take the best of the above and let the employees of the township vote.  The contest is still evolving and the prize will be announced on our new website.

The Police Department has been very busy with day to day calls, as well as their highly successful senior watch program.  Contact the department if you would like to become a part of it.  Our men and women are truly oriented to our community and safety is number one on their minds.  In an effort to provide for their continued safety, we are actively pursuing the possible purchase of Taisers for the department, through possible grants.  It seems any more when the potential for violence, alcohol and drugs mix, the outcome is never certain.  With the Taisers option, we provide an alternative and hopefully a tool to help assure the safety of our employees and the people they may have to detain.  One additional note, the Police department new generator is now up and running, so in the event of an electrical emergency the Police and Fire Department are still a beacon of hope and security, in an emergency and a place you can seek out if the need ever arises.

The Brimfield Fire Department is organized, ready and continuing the remarkable achievement they have strived for in the reorganization of the department.  Every corner we turn we find a situation that needs corrected, many times not from neglect but from the age of the building and the equipment.  The Brimfield Fire Station is old, and with such high usage, it is wearing out.  Folks, all personalities aside, we need this Fire Levy to pass, so we can continue to provide the best service to all and to cover all of the days with staffed EMT’s to provide, for residents and non residents, response time in minutes.  Please give the Fire Department the vote YES and show the men and women who provide for all of our safety that we, as a united township, stand squarely behind their mission.  I ask anyone of you that have question to stop up and meet our chief and the men and women we seldom see till we need them.

Roads – two words: SNOW and ICE.  Our road department has been working many long hours to keep ahead of the conditions and at times it seems they are losing the battle.  Remember there are 33 miles of road to take care of in the township, and only 4 men!  When the snow flies, we must maintain the most traveled roads first, and then work our way into the secondary and side roads.  If you need help, or have a situation, do not hesitate to call town hall.  If no one is there, call the Police Department and someone will get in touch with the road department.  We have purchased over $14,000 in salt to date, and with this crazy weather trend, I see additional purchases coming.  A note to think about: last year’s winter, the township spent over $45,000 in salt, which has led to a defined snow plowing and salting policy, if you like to review it, just ask.

The trustees now have office hours so feel free to come up and visit with your questions and comments.  My hours are 9:00am – 11:00am on most Mondays.  If it is easier for you, please schedule a visit with Carol Nelson at the town hall.  Sue’s hours are Thursdays, 4:00 p.m. -  5:30 p.m..  I want all of you who want to be informed to have the opportunity.  Help us help our township!  Get involved and visit our website often to learn what’s up in town.

Have a safe and productive month!
